Welcome to our web site!

Another year as passed and as we approach 2009 we will have some major challanges to ensure the Suffolk County Volunteer Fire Service can maintain its dedicated and outstanding service to the communities we serve.
We thank those members and departments who have worked hard in helping us accomplish our goals in 2008.  We, the Volunteer Fire Service of not only Suffolk County, but our neighboring counties of Nassau, Westchester and other NYS areas will continue to serve our communities with dedication and professionalism.

LONG ISLAND FIRE SERVICE LEGISLATION FORUM:
On Saturday, December 6, 2008 our 2nd Annual Legislative Forum was held at the East Farmingdale FD headquarters.  Our  U.S. Representatives Peter King, Tim Bishop, Steve Israel and Carolyn McCarthy's Chief of Staff attended are pledged their continued support for the fire service.  In addition, New York State Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick and County Legislator John Kennedy were there to show their support for the fire service.  We thank the representation from all the major fire service organizations of Suffolk, Nassau and Westchester counties who attended and gave support to  these legislators who have supported us over the years.

The Congressional Fire Service Institutue (CFSI) Forum in Washington DC will be on April 2&3, 2009.  We had approximately 150 fire service attendees from Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Monroe and various other counties in the state last year and would like to improve on that this year.  We will meet with all our U.S. Representatives and various other state representatives in one of the legislative buildings to better coordinate and improve access to the legislative staff members who are the subject matter experts for our fire service concerns.  We will also make it more available for the individual legislators to arrange time to speak to us and for photo ops. We will again try to meet with the National Volunteer Fire Council and the International Codes Council.  We have been  very successful in getting support for the major issues affecting the fire service and we want to improve on those successes.  Be sure and attend our next meeting to learn how you can help in our efforts.
If you are interested in attending this Forum next year, please contact Ex-Chief Ron Barz at 631-979-0680, Ex-Chief Greg Anderson at 516-241-1985, Ex-Chief Bob Holley at 732-617-1080 or Ex-Chief John Urevich at 631-484-9509.

In regards to these legislative issues, we still need to work with our legislators in order to maintain funding levels for the Fire Act, SAFER Grants, National Fire Academy and various other fire service programs.  This year we will be introducing new federal legislation to try to get additional funding for our State and County Fire Academies.  At the State level we are coordinating with the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, the New York State Districts Association and FASNY to maintain funding for training and addressing other fire service issues.  A list of these issues is posted under the Legislative Activity link.
Please attend your township and county organization meetings to find out how you can help in this effort.
